- This paper describes and explains the role of TVET as a focal point for building connections, collaboration and capacity building among educational sectors as well as between education providers and local communities. In the case study that we present, over 1200 senior school students are participating in TVET through the TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute and the University of Newcastle at three campuses (Gosford, Ourimbah and Wyong) on the Central Coast of New South Wales. Our main interest is the TVET programs offered at the Ourimbah campus as this is a joint VET and higher education campus, established in 1989 with a ‘foundation tree’ planting on 22 March 1989 at an 81 hectares site initially purchased for a proposed College of Advanced Education. The Central Coast Community College was already teaching from the site in a set of buildings along a ridge above the main property, an old dairy farm. “Ourimbah” is an Indigenous word about a place of initiation and learning and we are proud to share this heritage on traditional lands.
